Rethinking Patterns : Moving towards Heterogenic Structure

The AA_Aarhus Visiting School was taking place in what UNESCO has dubbed the International Year of Light, raising global awareness on the importance of light and light-based technologies. As a part of this global initiative, the AA_Aarhus Visiting School investigated the use of light in design and how it can be controlled and modulated through physical patterns using computational techniques.

The AA_Aarhus Visiting School is a three-year research agenda seeking to investigate the implications of computational tools in design and fabrication under different scales of architecture. The Aarhus School of Architecture will host a 10 day workshop in collaboration with the Architectural Association of London. The workshops focus was on novel computational tools coupled with fabrication techniques that investigate designs particular to the ecology of Denmark.

I wanted to make coffee table, simple and aesthetics, but also make something about it a little off. So, I decided to experiment with color concrete and make a table out of it. I combined it with my fascination with geometric shapes.

This is what came of it.

Land Rush Valby

Hvad ville du gøre for at skabe liv i et gammelt industriområde? Hvordan udnytter man, at to af Københavns største haller står tomme til næste år? Hvad bruger man et tomt område til i årene før og mens det bebygges? Grønttorvsgrunden i Valby skal udvikles til et nyt boligområde. Det er en 15-årig proces, og det er vigtigt at området ikke står stille i mellemtiden. Kom med din idé til, hvordan området kan bruges – af hvem og til hvad?

“Land Rush eller Land run”
Idéen om at udstykke et stort stykke land i mindre lodder, som folk kan ‘indtage’, kommer fra ‘det vilde vestens’ legendariske “Land runs”. Forudsat deltagerne brugte jorden og forbedrede det, kunne deltagerne så modtage rettigheden til jorden.

Det vil skabe grobund for fællesskab, naboskab, ejerskab – selvom det vil være på lånt tid Det vil skabe et sted hvor ideer kan få lov at spire. De bedst fungerende initiativer vil så efterfølgende kunne flyttes ud i området og allerede være veletablerede og integrerede i lokalsamfundet. Indgrebene struktureres i et simpelt system; griddet, for at gøre området let brugbart for alle.

Felterne er en fastholdelse af grønttorvets historie, de kan i den ønskede periode skabe aktivitet på grønttorvet hvor Valbys nye bydel skabes af de kommende borgere. Hvad skal disse felter så bruges til? Der er vel ingen grænser. Det vigtigste er, at det er lokale eller kommende beboere der skaber området. Og at der foreligger en tidsplan for hele griddet, så man ved hvor lang tid man kan råde over sit felt.

Disse aktiviteter vil skabe fundamentet for en alsidig og mangfoldig brug, samt udvikling af grønttorvsområdet. De vil kunne spredes som frø rundt i den nye bydel, når den står klar, hvor de så vil kunne blomstre op på ny.

Light Scapes Workshop

Lightscapes is an investigation of natural and artificial light, leading to producing and placing objects in and around Letterfrack. The objects have a scale chosen by the participants, ranging from 1:1 to 1:10. The appearance of the objects adapt to the changing light conditions of night and day.During daytime the objects offer the bypasser an experience of the light as received by the object. During nighttime, the objects emit light and function as landmarks surrounding Letterfrack.

The attractorpoint is defined from a point in Rhino which is able to move. The attractor point moves the radius of the diagonal line. The rotation angle is limited to move between 30 degrees and 150 degress. The rotation closest to the attractor point rotates the most (150 degrees) where as the rotationpoint furthest away from the attractorpoint rotates the least (30 degress)

Light Piano

This light machine is an instrument where light, rather than sounds, are your tones. The performance is inside of the piano. While an acoustic piano spreads tones into its surroundings from within the piano case, the light piano collects natural light from its context into a chamber where darkness equates with silence. By opening and closing shutters in different orientations, one can experience light and darkness without being able to view the light source – only the light. Light is filtered through six identical modules each orientated in a different direction. The module pulls light down a shaft and reflects it on a surface. The six illuminated surfaces establish the inner walls of the cubic piano chamber. In a building scale the light piano is a pavilion or a hideout. You cannot view out and nobody can see you inside. The horizontal light shafts function as entrance. Due to the light pianos small size it is easily transportable. The light conditions in a variety of places can be investigated.
